SMS Delivery Status - Understanding the Single and Double Check Mark

With any good SMS marketing program, you want to monitor your SMS delivery status. You should be able to monitor messages in the following statuses:

  • Sent (single check mark)
  • Delivered (double check mark)
  • Failed (red ‘x’)

At Blaze SMS, we give you granular delivery reports on every SMS sent, including the cost and what resource (Campaign, Automation, etc), initiated the send.

What each delivery status means

  • Sent: This means that your message has been sent to the recipient’s carrier network. The message sent outbound successfully.
  • Delivered: The carrier network confirmed that the message was fully delivered.
  • Failed: The pre-delivery process failed, or the carrier network itself responded with an error, typically that it wouldn’t accept the message, or that the number is not valid.

If a message only says “Sent” does that mean it was definitely not delivered?

No. Some carriers, such as VoIP lines, like Google Voice, or smaller carriers, and international ones, might rarely (or never) respond with a “Delivered” status. This doesn’t mean that the message wasn’t delivered. The carrier might have an intermittent issue with this confirmation response, or it might simply just not support this delivery confirmation status altogether. This doesn’t mean that the message wasn’t delivered. It is, however, altogether uncertain whether it was delivered or not, and there is no “definite” way to know. In our experience, it’s often the case that the message was in fact delivered successfully.

If a message fails, how can I determine what happened?

At BlazeSMS, in your Analytics tab, we provide a detailed full error response that reads out exactly what happened regarding the message. Carriers may reject messages for all sorts of reasons. The phone may have been disconnected, the carrier may have flagged it as spam, or various other issues may have arisen. You’ll be able to see exactly what happened in your Analytics → Messages tab.
